We went to see Blasted and I can honestly say it was the most interesting theatrical production I’ve ever been to. I can’t say if I liked it or not because it was so out there I don’t think anyone can say they ‘liked’ it. I thought it was really well acted especially the Cate character. I have to say that I had absolutely no sympathy for Ian seeing as it was pretty strongly implied that he was a child molester and Cate was one of his victims. Even in spite of that he seemed like a complete ass. I wasn’t sure if Cate had some type of mental disability or if she was just a little odd. Either way she was my favorite character in the play. I liked how even though she was most likely a victim of child molestation by Ian, she wasn’t afraid to stand up to him and it really seemed like she thought he was a little bit pathetic, which I enjoyed. The scenes between Ian and the soldier were really intense and disturbing. I kind of knew the soldier wasn’t going to end up killing him, but I didn’t think he was going to rape him. That was probably the only time in the play I felt a little bit bad for him in the play, but that didn’t last long. The most disturbing scene for me was when the soldier ate Ian eyes out of his head. I actually had to look away because I felt a little sick. We saw a preview in class of the play so I knew the character was going to have his eyes plucked out but I didn’t think it would happen like that. A lot of people I talked to were more creeped out by Ian eating the baby but I wasn’t really disturbed by that because it was so obvious to me that the baby wasn’t real. Going back to the soldier I have to say that I thought his introduction was hilarious. I was sitting in my seat stifling laughter for a good two or three minutes watching him hold Ian at gunpoint while eating Ian and Cate’s breakfast with his hands. Overall I think it was a really great production. I’ve never seen anything like it and I don’t think I ever will again. Or maybe I will if I ever see another Sara Kane play.
