This has to be the best musical for young people of my generation. The story revolves around four average young males who have taken a week in the Spanish sunshine to celebrate their graduation. Delayed at the airport, they try to piece together their drunken nights in bars, only to discover a common connection with Sophie. Wearing large gold hoop earrings and with a cocktail in hand, Sophie boldly tries seducing the young men, also the way that a lot of young women in today’s world are.
The script is overflowing with swear words and there are sexual references at every turn, you have to remember that these are young, out of control guys running wild on a cheap holiday. The writer has made the script as honest as possible, I feel. The language is honest and the guys are depicted as being outgoing, competitive, vulgar and just how you'd see a group of young guys on holiday. The writer cleverly lifts the front that the boys have on their personalities, revealing their backgrounds, relationships, fears and insecurities. Through Sophie, they show a softer side as boundaries break down, revealing who they really are. This is first to Sophie and then to each other with dramatic consequences.
The best of the show, without a doubt, has to be the music, though – GAY, GAY, GAY. The great songs and laugh out loud lyrics have your hands clapping from the start. The four strong leads have a blast with the songs they are given to perform, and their dance sequences are a awesome. And despite the minimum set and some lame songs and moments I loved every second of the show and would go back if given a chance.
