Rock of Ages The Experience by Vanessa Rodriguez

The musical Rock of Ages had been in San Francisco at the exact time that I was getting ready to come to London. I had missed my window of opportunity to go see it, or so I thought. When I began to see it on taxi cabs and on posters, I thought what great luck I had because I could choose any day I wanted to go see it. So on October 28th, I did. I am a big fan of classic rock and this musical was pretty much the equivalent of those CDs you see in infomercials where they have 200 of the best hits of classic rock. But wait there’s more! You know where I’m going with this. I managed to get a really great seat for myself in the 7th row of the stalls. I was close to the stage but not so close that I would have to lean back to see what was going on in the back of the stage.

When I first walked into the theatre and I saw the stage, I could tell I was in for one of the most interesting productions of my life. No joke I could feel the STDs coming off of the stage. It was grimy and dirty. There were panties and bras hanging on the walls as decorations. It was AMAZING! Did I mention that the story takes place in 80s Sunset Blvd in California. It is all about the music and people trying to make their dreams come true in rock music and the obvious obstacles that come along with those dreams. The narrator opens the play and introduces the audience to the characters. The narrator is the only character that knows this is a play. The other characters go on about their daily lives. The narrator was funny and he was able to ad-lib some of his lines. It made for a refreshing experience.

Rock of Ages is all about the music and I do not mean it in an obvious this is a musical way. The plot is about rock music, the music is comprised of some of the biggest classic rock hits, and it would not be complete without lighters for the ballads. Oh yes, they gave out free “lighters” for people to use during the ballad numbers of the play. They encouraged singing and clapping and waving your arms. It was so much fun. It was an interactive play. It had a great plot and the music was fun to listen to. In all honesty, I want to go again.

You're not allowed to take pics in the theatre so I got these online BUT this is the cast that I saw
