Chicago: A night of sequins and catchy tunes

As the lights dimmed, nothing shined brighter than the cast of Chicago in their sequined dresses, bright red lipsticks and glitzy pants. The live orchestra began the show with "All that Jazz"and chills instantly ran throughout my body as the voices echoed throughout the theatre. I am astounded by the way the cast moved their bodies together and not one dancer was off beat. The ladies of the show danced and entertained the audience with their seductive movements and teasing voices. My eyes gravitated to the silver skin tight dresses that clung to their bodies as they tap danced across the stage.  I fell in love with the main character Velma, played by Sarah Soetaert. Her luxurious red hair and sultry voice captivated the audience in a magical way. She stood out among the cast, and her witty performance made her one of my favorite characters. The male characters were also very talented and moved gracefully across the stage with swift motions and sparkling vests. The glamourous costumes and upbeat cast take you to a place where music and dancing are the main form of communication.
Chicago is one of my favorite musical, but the experience of seeing it live was more surreal than watching the movie and listening to the soundtrack. I was excited when I found out that the Cambridge Theatre was playing Chicago. The musical's plot contained criminals, murder and infidelity but ironically is peformed with upbeat music and lots of colorful outfits. The positive energy that the cast gave off helped the audience gain a sense of intimacy with the music. The songs were more clear and vibrant on stage. I left this musical with excitment and a desire to dance and sing as well.  I enjoyed the exaggeration of movement and tone of voice that the characters used on stage. The best part was the  humor that fitted perfectly into the songs and gestures of each character. I liked that the theatre space was small enough to give the audience a closer look at the cast and orchestra. There definately was a magical atmosphere that the musical created, and the cast kept the audience enertained.
I recommend everyone to come out and enjoy a night of jazz show tunes and dazzingly attire. The cast is witty and everything about this musical is superb!
