Puppet Theatre: What’s the offer?

Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones, founders of Handspring Puppet Company, will talk about their work from the point of view of the particular ‘offer’ that puppetry makes to contemporary theatre.

They will attempt to explain why many leading theatre makers like Le Page, Wilson, Complicite and Kentridge are using puppetry in their work, referring to the emergence of new ideas of wholism in current theatre which reflect on the integration and inclusion and importance of animals, fantasy creatures, babies and kinetic objects into our emotional lives.

They will also deal with the ‘offer’ question from another point of view, namely the way puppet theatre reinvents and valorises the quotidian – the everyday. Here they’ll explain and discuss their ideas on micro-movement.

Handspring Puppet Company was founded in 1981 and during its first five years, toured shows to schools across southern Africa. In 1985, they produced their first show for adults and have been doing so ever since. Their association with the artist William Kentridge saw the creation of 6 highly acclaimed productions that toured to theatre festivals around the world, including Edinburgh, Avignon, New York, Rome, Paris and many other cities.

War Horse, which they created in association with The National Theatre, is currently playing in the West End and opens on Broadway next spring.

Adrian Kohler is Handspring’s artistic director. He designs their puppets and heads up their team of fabricators, who are based in Cape Town. Basil Jones is the company’s producer.  Kohler and Jones are currently performing at the Cottesloe Theatre in Or You Can Kiss Me, a new play be Neil Bartlett.
