In spite of In Your Face drama, this blog entry is only going to be as clean as the play “Blasted” that we saw on Monday November, 15 (which means extremely filthy). But yeah, WHAT THE FUCK. This play “Blasted” by Sarah Kane was the most disturbing hour and forty-five minutes of my life. I mean, okay. At the beginning of this play, I admit I was appalled to be greeted with an opening scene that contained a old, penis. Yeah this definitely was the first part of the play, which was probably 5-10 minutes in the let me know that I was in for a long bumpy ride. That first…. Penis…. Was followed by ‘wanking,’ blowjobs, humping of passed out girls, and just extremely disturbing interactions with a young girl and an old man. I mean, tell you the truth, I don’t remember much of the dialogue verbatim, but all I remember a bunch of yelling from one character to another—where the old man would treat the girl horribly—and then this little psycho girl would give him a blowjob? I mean this was only in the first parts of the play, but it left me so confused.
Once the girl left through the bathroom, and the bald soldier came into the play, I was like “there we go, now we are talking. That old man deserves whatever he is going to get.” But yeah, WHAT THE FUCK. From after the little comic relief where the soldier eats all of the old mans breakfast, this play goes downhill so drastically fast. Once a bomb hits this set, the curtains go down, and when they got back up, hell came with it. From after the ‘bombing’ to the end of the play, was the vilest, horrible, fucked up things that I have ever seen in my entire life. For one, the stories that this soldier was telling that he did to little girls were the most deranged things I have ever heard of. Especially in the calm way he said it. But then, of course Sarah Kane needs an ass-raping scene. OFCOURSE ITS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO SEE ON A MONDAY NIGHT. This soldier, rapes this old man; and I’m not going to say anything more than he didn’t only just put his penis in his bum… But yeah this whole scene was probably the most unbearable thing I could watch. While awkwardly looking away and keeping my stomach tight, this play was a whole new level of disturbing. I guess that is what in-your-face drama is all about. Not to mention the eye gauging, suicidal attempts, baby killing, baby eating, that happens until the end of the play. Overall, this play was just so wrong is so many different levels. Levels upon levels.
If my mind was the old man, Sarah Kane’s Blasted was the soldier that raped me. I definitely believe after watching this whole play, my mind lost a certain sense of its.. virginity. But I got to hand it to you Dr. Q, thank you so much for giving us this privilege to watch this vile production. With this, I definitely felt like I’ve seen some of the best actors that I have ever seen on stage. I was in such belief, and maybe too much belief, on what they were acting on stage. Furthermore, with this experience, my mind has definitely gotten broadened by what theatre can do to ones mind. I think it is absolutely fantastic that these three actors can give me these deranged feelings that I had during this entire production. I mean, I definitely would not want any of my parents, aunts, uncles, family, sons, daughters, I don’t know, my dog, to ever watch this play. I feel like it definitely gave my mind so many deranged thoughts that in a way corrupted me. I think the only thing that kept me going to not stand up and leave the play, was how beautiful that girl actress was. :)
Hah, I just wanted to point out one more thing… Last two words of the play.. Thank You. Hahahahahaahhahahahahahaahhaahaha, Blasted.

Oh, God, I could not stop laughing during this entire review but you perfectly managed to articulate everything I'm sure EVERYONE thought about this play. Spot on. x

Me too. You have made old Dr Q giggle as well. I feel so sad that you won't let your dog see the play. What would woofers make of it? More seriously, this is an amazing review because you express yourself with so much passion and fun that I want to read and re-read the piece from beginning to end. Talk about a mind-blowing experience eh? This thoroughly entertaining response has made my evening. Dr Q
ReplyDeleteThis review has probably been the most enjoyable one that i've read on this blog! I loved how you tied in humor with your true reactions to the play and it was almost as if an IN-YOUR-FACE response to the in-your-face drama. You definitely did not hold back your thoughts and it was great! and because it was so honest and because you didn't hold back, i think that's what made it the best review i've read all night! good job!

While reading this blog post I thought you had read my mind. I agree with you at every point. Blasted was very very disturbing and even weeks later I am disgusted with the fact that 1) someone actually came up with the story, 2) there are actors that want to perform such cruel and vile acts, and 3) that we sat through the play for an entire hour and 45 minutes. I agree with you that the play was a learning experience, but it was definitely messed up in a lot of other ways. I am glad I have someone on my side who felt literally the EXACT same way!
