In America we call soccer and not football because we like to be different from everyone else. In reality I don’t know why we call it soccer and not football. Soccer in the U.S. is not very popular and it’s really boring to watch unless you’re a big fan of David Beckham, then you might like it. However, I enjoyed playing soccer and playing FIFA video games with my friends because it is fun and exciting. I never had opportunity to go watch a live soccer game and I was invited to go watched Manchester United vs. FC Basel, a Champions League game with my friends on September 27, 20011. My expectation for the game was high because I imagined everyone going crazy and seeing a lot of amazing goals.
The day of the game was an exciting day for me because I was going to share an incredible moment with my friends while we watched one of the best teams of the world. Before we arrived to the game it took almost three hours from London to Manchester in the Virgin train. Three hours that became almost five hours because I could not wait and see the game at the Old Trafford Stadium. When we arrived to the Old Trafford Stadium, I was amazed of how big it was and I could not believed I was in front of it. Before the game started, I saw a lot of fans with their red jerseys and the majority of them were holding a glass cup of beer. When I saw that they were holding a glass cup of beer, it is when I knew it was going to be an exciting game and I also knew that the fans would play a key role in the game. The moment I walk up to the stairs to find my seat it became a dream because it was going to be a magical game. The soccer field was beautiful because I have never seen a grass field so green in my life. Back home I would play soccer in the dirt or out in the street, but never in a grass field. My “wow” moment is when I look around the stadium and I became amazed of how big and beautiful it was from the inside too. After 360 degree of view of the stadium, I knew I could not compare the Old Trafford to the stadiums back home because they are small and not as beautiful as the Old Trafford.
The game started and I was ready to see some amazing goals from both teams. I wanted to watch both Rooney and Chicharito out in the field, but unfortunately they were injured. However, I was still looking forward to a great match as well as the crowd getting hype up during the match. Being close to the soccer field was amazing because you can see the players very close and you can take a lot of pictures. I realized that the majority of the stadium was filled with Manchester United’s fans and there was a small section that supported the FC Basel team. The first half of the game, Manchester United dominated the game because they scored two goals. The first two goals scored by Welbeck led to a crazy celebration by the fans because they were jumping of joy, screaming, drinking, and a lot of high-fives. I felt that I was part of the celebration because I also jump and scream of joy of the goals scored by Welbeck. I felt adrenaline rush through my entire body when the two goals were scored and it felt great. The second half of the game was very different from the first half because the atmosphere changed when the opposite team ties the game. The Manchester United’s fans were quite and the only noise we heard was the FC Basel’s fans celebrating. However, the last eight minutes of the game were the best moments because the atmosphere was very intense. The opposite scored another goal and it was 3-2 and many of the Manchester United’s fans were shocked and angry that their team was losing. As the time approach to the 90-minute mark, many of the fans left the game because they lost hope. The person sitting next to me became angry when the referee missed to called a foul and when he called a foul against Manchester United. I remember the guy saying, “bloody hell” or “you dickhead” to the referee and I thought it was very funny. I never saw someone very passionate and energy about a sport game, okay, maybe I have, but not in a live game. In the 90-minute mark, it is when everyone celebrated and maybe cried because Young scored a goal and ties the game. The crow went crazy as if a miracle just happened in front of the eyes for about a minute. Everyone started to chant and stomp their feet to give motivation to the players to win the game. The game ended 3-3 and I was happy that I had the opportunity to witness an intense game were both teams went head to head.
I will never forget the last few minutes of the game and I’m glad that I went to a Manchester United game.
Go Red Devils!!!
