Arcade Fire: An Unforgettable Gig

Music is in one-way or another apart of each and every person’s life. Without a doubt there are a few exceptional bands that I honestly hold dear to my heart. Steaming from my passionate love for music, I live for going to gigs. Since I was about 15 years old I have been a dedicated fan of the Canadian indie rock band The Arcade Fire and have been itching to see them live; This past Thursday evening I finally was given the opportunity to make that dream reality. Along with thousands of other London fans good friend Ashley and I made the trek to the famous O2 Arena to see the charming Devandra Banhart (the opening act) and the amazing Arcade Fire.
Upon arriving at the massive venue I was pretty darn disappointed that we had bought sitting tickets, because I knew I would have loved being closer to the action if we were placed in the standing section. Regardless of that downside I knew I was in for a great night and kept my cheerful attitude in check. We took our assigned seats and within no time it was 8pm and the opening act took the stage. I was graced with another well-respected artist I admire by the name of Devandra Banhart. I had previously seen him a few years back and just as he did the first time I saw him he set the scene for a warming and jolly environment. Him and few fellow band members had such a short amount of time on stage and I felt like they were more concentrated on each other rather than engaging with the audience. Feeling pleased yet not overjoyed I was now craving the main reason I attended this gig.
Once again the lights went down and instantly the entire audience clapped and cheered, desperately waiting for the show to begin. This was it! Here I was sitting next to one friend and thousands of strangers, but that didn’t matter; Arcade Fire was the only thing I’m on my mind. From the very start of their first opening song each of the eight band members exploded with energy as they displayed their amazing talent; they aren’t a typical band, because they are insanely skillful with blending various instruments together such as guitar, bass, drums, piano, violin, harp, etc. In addition to their powerful physical performance the band also includes visual effects; two large projectors were displayed on either side of the stage which played added a sort a depth of the stories of their songs.
After the first couple songs the lead singer, Win Butler, invited the audience to stand up to dance and sing along. I was so pleased by this request and shot up to my feet. It was at this moment that I felt a real connection, because I was able free to move along to the music and absorb it up. The highlight of this musical event was the beautiful finale. Arcade Fire passionately performed one of their top hit songs (also one of my favorites), “Wake Up” and the entire audience sang along! It may sound overrated, but this moment was truly epic. Win Butler was sweating from intensity, the rhythms of the instruments were booming with noise and the audience turned into a sea of waving arms. This was a night in London to remember!
