To this day Covent Garden is a well-known hot spot for entertainment. Because of its popularity in London, my roommate, Justine and I agreed to check out the place. As we hit, James Street, we heard applauses from an upcoming crowd, so we decided to speed up our steps and see what the admiration was all about. And there he was, the magician man! I thought to myself, “Oh boy, and another lame magic show in the streets.” Little did I know that his breath taking street performance would leave me in a state of astonishment.
From left to right, there stood children, teens, and adults standing so eagerly on their toes waiting for the magic to begin. Due to our height advantage, Justine and I were able to make our way through the crowd and get a complete full view of the show. Across from us, the magician stood behind his wooden stool that had an enormous black suitcase on top. Because James Street is a very noisy area, the magician wore a microphone head set to project his voice.
Shortly after, the magic begun! He asked for an audience member to participate. There weren’t many hands up in the air so he pointed out a little 5-year-old boy named Max. The audience gave him a big round of applause and in return he revealed a huge colgate smile to us. Before starting his magician act with Max, the magician went up to a little boy from the audience in order to “find” his rubber ball. When he did, there was very little applause. The magician looked around and stated, “I know this is a very lame trick but at least give me a round of applause here!” Immediately, the crowd laughed and clapped. It seemed as if he had begun his show with the flimsy and most obvious trick of all.
The trick became a bit more intense after the magician announced he was about to shove an inflatable balloon down his throat and all the way towards his fallopian tubes. I noticed Max looking horrifically at the balloon as he was making his way back to his parents. Immediately, the magician asked Max, “Where are you going Max? We are not done yet!” He grabbed Max by the shoulder and little did everyone realize that he was on the verge of tears! Everyone began to laugh and the Magician told him not to cry because he would miss out on his reward, so Max agreed to stay. The magician continued on with the show and inserted the balloon into his mouth. Very rapidly, the magician took the balloon out of his mouth and said, “I need to drink some water so I can gets some lubrication.” Of course, the only people who laughed were adults and not children. He said, “It’s okay for me to say this because children do not know this word. But if your children laughed, then that means you are bad parents!” This magician was being real and sarcastic at the same time, which I found entertaining. In the end, the magician pulled off this trick and left me speechless. I was waiting for the balloon to pop but it didn’t! This made me question where it could’ve gone.
Finally, he asked Max to crumble up a newspaper into a ball. The trick was making the newspaper disappear after the magic word. The magician held it in his hand and asked Max to shout very loudly, abracadabra! Turned out the magician ended up launching the newspaper ball out into the crowd, without Max realizing the trick! Everyone laughed but as a reward of his participation, Max received a balloon shaped dog.
Overall, the magician was a great street performer. He had the ability to keep everyone in the audience engaged with his work. I am glad to have come to Covert Garden on this day and become part of such a magical experience in London!
